Breakthrough House in Montreal by Desjardins Bherer

Set in a forested landscape outside Montreal, this residence by Desjardins Bherer reworks a 1990s structure into a light-filled retreat. The architects opened the footprint by removing part of the ground floor and enclosing an extension in glass, creating a double-height living area that frames views of the pool and valleys beyond.

The interiors pair sleek finishes with warmth. Porcelain tiles and wood ceilings set the tone, while the dining area features Fitzgerald chairs by Poltrona Frau gathered around a long white table. In the living room, the Archibald armchair by Poltrona Frau sits alongside modular sofas, oriented toward a fireplace clad in black concrete. A sculptural wood suspension lamp floats above the dining table, anchoring the social core of the home.

The kitchen, tucked beneath the mezzanine, contrasts bright white lacquer cabinetry with bleached oak. A long island extends with Flow stools from MDF Italia, designed for casual meals or conversation during gatherings.

Throughout, expansive glazing, glass balustrades, and riser-free stairs keep sightlines open, ensuring that every space stays visually tied to the surrounding forest and outdoor living areas.
