Cantilevered Timber Residence Frames the Goan Landscape

by Stefan Gheorghe

Set on a steep Goan hillside, Timber Residence is anchored by bold cantilevers that project the living spaces into the surrounding canopy. Designed by Architecture Discipline, the 8,650 ft² house uses a linear pitched-roof form, with eleven glulam portal frames supporting its structure.

The home rests lightly on the terrain, raised on stilts and retaining walls to preserve the slope and vegetation. Its dramatic cantilevered decks and volumes extend toward views of the Chapora River and Arabian Sea, while a slender pool projects outward from the façade, heightening the sense of suspension.

Prefabricated glulam frames were assembled on-site in just 30 days, combining precision engineering with a sustainable material system. Inside, black stone floors and exposed timber structure frame double-height spaces, where the cantilever effect translates into open interiors that dissolve the boundary between house and landscape
