Off-Grid Design Meets Rural Character: Kavillo Studios in Mudgee

by Stefan Gheorghe

Set in the rural landscape of Central West NSW, Kavillo Studios reinterpret the region’s building traditions with a modern, sustainable approach. Designed as four studio dwellings, the structures draw inspiration from nearby shearing sheds and historic pisé (rammed earth) buildings.

Their striking tent-like forms combine galvanised sheet metal roofs with thick rammed earth walls, grounding the buildings in both function and context.

The architecture balances openness and protection. Large glazed openings invite natural light and frame views of the landscape, while the angled rooflines close to the west, shielding the interiors from harsh afternoon sun. The rammed earth wall anchors each studio, providing both insulation and privacy, and creating a tactile connection to the surrounding terrain. Generous roof overhangs and pergolas further enhance shading, ensuring comfort in the hot summers.

The development integrates a 26kW solar system stored in a mechanical flywheel battery, complemented by 210,000 liters of rainwater storage. The combination of robust, low-maintenance materials and renewable energy systems results in studios that are resilient, efficient, and deeply tied to their place.
