Nestled in the lush enclave of Tanarimba, Janda Baik, Malaysia, the Rainforest Residence by Choo Gim Wah Architect redefines tropical living through concrete minimalism and deep engagement with nature. Designed for an artist family, the linear structure integrates with the forested slope, using the terrain to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior.

Circulation is orchestrated through open-air pathways, where light and greenery become part of the architectural experience. A bold concrete shell defines the home’s monolithic character, while strategic voids—including a circular oculus—bring in forest-filtered light. Brick elements soften the heavy materials, and the use of glazing opens the upper-level living spaces to treetop views.

Concrete walls act as curatorial surfaces for artwork. A double-height living space and art studio spill into the landscape, offering both creative focus and immersion in the surrounding environment. This residence is not just a home—it’s a meditative dialogue between architecture and rainforest.
