Ridge Oak Residence: A Mid-Century Modern Revival in Austin
Originally designed in the 1950s by architect Howard R. Barr, FAIA, this Highland Park home in Austin, Texas, has been thoughtfully expanded and renovated by Clayton Korte. The transformation respects the home’s mid-century modern roots, maintaining the original brick, wood siding, and carefully proportioned openings while introducing modern functionality and additional living space.
The residence has grown from 2,176 to 3,696 square feet, now featuring a larger kitchen, living and family rooms, an expanded master suite, and ensuite guest bedrooms. Floor-to-ceiling white oak shiplap wraps the main living spaces, while new steel-framed windows at the rear capture sweeping views of Lake Austin, the Hill Country, and the iconic Pennybacker Bridge. A cantilevered concrete foundation preserves the root zones of a heritage oak tree at the heart of the property.
Entire design blends warm materials with crisp detailing—white cabinetry and black countertops in the kitchen, wood-paneled walls in the living spaces, and abundant natural light. The result is a home that honors its architectural heritage while embracing contemporary living.
