Skylight Hut: Where a Trapezoidal Roof Shapes a New Countryside Escape

by Stefan Gheorghe

Atelier Hajný has renovated a 1970s stone hut in the Sázava region near Prague into a compact countryside retreat called Skylight Hut.

The original single-story structure was stripped back to its stone base and rebuilt with a concrete slab and timber frame, topped by a corrugated metal trapezoidal roof. The new form meets the local height limit of 7.7 metres while adding an attic bedroom lit by skylights.

The exterior combines dark-grey metal cladding with the stone foundation, while inside, pine plywood covers walls, ceilings, and built-in furniture. The layout includes multiple storage spaces, a kitchen, living space, and bathroom on the main floor, with additional storage designed under the stairs to maximize every part of the compact footprint.

A deep roof overhang shelters a small patio and helps regulate the indoor climate. Bright interiors contrast the dark exterior, creating a warm, wood-lined refuge surrounded by garden and forest views.
