Sugi House by Condon Scott Architects: A Compact Retreat with Japanese Influence

Located in Wanaka, New Zealand, the 90-square-meter Sugi House was designed by Condon Scott Architects for a family of five based in Singapore. Inspired by the efficiency of Japanese ski lodges, the house balances compactness with comfort, providing a functional retreat on a small footprint.

The exterior features warm cedar shingles used for both cladding and roofing, ensuring low maintenance and visual unity. Glazing is strategically placed to maximize mountain views while preserving privacy from the street. A sheltered terrace extends the living space, providing a private outdoor area during warmer months.

The house is laid out over two levels. The ground floor includes a double-height kitchen and living area, a children’s bedroom, and a bathroom. Upstairs, there’s a main bedroom with an ensuite, a workspace, and storage. Black fixtures contrast with timber-lined walls, while built-in solutions like under-stair drawers and recessed shelving maximize functionality.

Thermal efficiency was a key focus. The home uses SIP panels, airtight wrapping, and high-spec double-glazed windows. Passive solar orientation and a single wood stove provide sufficient heating year-round.
