Divine Dining at Trattoria Cori Pastificio in North Park
Trattoria Cori Pastificio 2977 Upas St, North Park
There are restaurants you admire, and restaurants you simply enjoy being in. Cori Pastificio manages to do both. Trattoria Cori Pastificio
It's built around the cooking of Sicilian-born chef Accursio Lota. Lota has earned some attention over the years, including recognition from Gambero Rosso. Gambero Rosso Chef Lota wanted to bring something of the old trattorias to San Diego. Eater San Diego's story about him provides some background on how it came together. Two neighbors, my partner and myself had a lovely meal there earlier this week. I ordered the tagliatelle as an entree. It was served with a lamb ragù, tomatos, roasted peppers and Moliterno cheese. I'm not so good at describing flavors, but this is how my partner described it: "Rich without being heavy, nicely balanced with acidity and spice to keep it lively." I really enjoyed myself, but forgot to take notes on my fellow diner's dishes! Suffice to say we were all very impressed.
What I particularly loved about Cori is that it feels like a neighborhood restaurant rather than a restaurant that's trying too hard. It's about the food, not the show. There's also a lovely outdoor dining area abutting its lively, urban location at the intersection of 30th and Upas. You know how much I like that!
And this: the sound deadening material on the underside of the tabletops. You know how loud restaurants can be with noise bouncing off all of those hard surfaces? It's an old restauranteur's trick to attach something soft to undersides of the tables. It goes a long way to muffle all of that ambient noise. I wish other restaurants used this trick.
I liked it a lot, and we'll be back.
