Hillcrest
Hillcrest, San Diego Real Estate
Hillcrest is a dense, walkable neighborhood just north of Balboa Park and downtown San Diego. It's the city's original gay neighborhood, home to two of its trauma hospitals and one of its largest farmers markets, and the place where John Bertsch built the Cairo live/work building on Park Boulevard.
A Neighborhood With Deep Civic Roots
A trolley line up 5th Avenue from downtown first opened Hillcrest to the city, and Hillcrest became San Diego's original gay neighborhood. A couple of its bars have stood for more than 50 years, and recent street work added a promenade honoring that history.
Jobs, Culture, and Community
Hillcrest holds the two San Diego hospitals with trauma centers, both major employers, and the Hillcrest Farmers Market, one of the city's largest and longest running. Balboa Park next door runs the Old Globe Theatre, where productions often try out before they head to Broadway.
Homes in Hillcrest
Condominiums and apartment buildings line the busier corridors, while the side streets hold Craftsman and Spanish-style houses, the older housing stock John's architecture background is suited to. His own contribution is Cairo, a 16-unit live/work condominium building on the stretch of Park Boulevard locals call Little Egypt, designed with Safdie Rabines Architects. Read the Cairo story.
